 Loftus branch of the Women’s Institute celebrating their 25th anniversary in 1948. The splendid repast on the tables must have used up a months worth of coupons or a tribute to their ingenuity? The only name we have at present for this photograph is Reverend Cumming (seated) in the middle of the front row. The photograph appears to have been taken at the ”Rectory” (Now called Linden House), pre 1910. This Rectory was first occupied by Reverend Hildyard, who was a nephew of Lord Nelson. Replacing an earlier single storied building, there have been two subsequent rectory moves since that time; with the present rectory now situated off Micklow Lane. Sybil Peters comments: “How strange! I put in my great grandfathers name and up he popped!I spent quite a lot of my childhood in Thirsk, where his daughter also lived. We know it is the Women’s Institute, is it amateur dramatics or maybe a fancy dress, we would love to know the occassion and who you recognise on this picture? Now do not be shy, it is too late now! And for younger viewers, can you identify the wooden object the lady on the left is holding? Bob Doe wins the identification quiz telling us: ”My parents used to have something like this in the 1940s/50s. I believe it was used for washing clothes in a wooden or metal tub.
