Staithes Bank

The road to Staithes harbour is reached by travelling down the steep bank; a postcard view from the early 20th century.

Runswick Bay

This almost lyrical view of Runswick Bay which includes the cottage perching on the northen end of the seawall, but unlike today (with a thatched roof) the cottage appears to have a pantile roof. Can anybody assist in dating the image? Wendy Haxton tells us: ”I have a hand-coloured postcard showing this cottage, which was printed in 1936 and entitled, Lady Palmer’s Cottage, Runswick Bay. On this card, the cottage to the left of the white-walled one, has a pantile roof.”

Image courtesy of Geoff Patton and thanks to Wendy Haxton for that update.

Going Fishing

A view of Staithes before the breakwater was constructed, a lone coble sets sail from the beach on a fishing trip. The image is from a Judges postcard.

Laurel Inn

The Laurel Inn, Robin Hood’s Bay; a much photographed location in the village. Situated on the steep road down to the beach.

Seaton Garth

Seaton Garth, Staithes, around 1900; someone’s chickens are loose on the Garth. In more modern times and despite the restrictions on motor vehicles accessing the Garth the poultry would have little chance to roam!

Beach, Robin Hood’s Bay

Dock End, from the beach, Bay Town. The ice cream van is very distinctive. The car perhaps an Standard 8 or 10? is helpful in dating this postcard, can our viewers assist?

Sandsend From The South

This Sandsend postcard view was taken after the tower was rebuilt on Lythe church 1911. The buildings to be seen include the chimney of the old alum works which are still intact. Sadly now gone and a loss to industrial archeology.

Sandsend Ness

The sea wall and in the background is Sandsend Ness. The building in this postcard is part of the old alum works it was cleared away to provide a car park.

A Judges postcard courtesy Maurice Grayson.

More Wave Damage at Staithes

A further view of the wave damage to the Cod and Lobster corner, be a bit draughty that night in the bar!
