Chapel at Kettleness

Another view of the chapel at Kettleness after it closed, sadly with broken windows courtesy of the vandals; viewed from the road.

Kettleness Chapel

The abandoned Chapel at Kettleness,  originally the mission church of St John the Baptist and built in 1872. With a distinctive patterned tile roof, this sturdy well constructed buiding has been turned into residential use. In the background on the hill can be seen Scratch Alley Farm, which stood beside the site of the Roman Signal Station; demolished some years ago.

Herring Fleet Whitby

The fishing fleet in Whitby Harbour. A variety of fishing craft are on view; Yorkshire coble’s both flat and double ended in the foreground and in the background two masted herring luggers. At the height of the season, the harbour was full of Scottish and Cornish boats following the herring around the coast, so full it was said you could walk across the harbour from boat to boat.

St Ann’s Staithe

This Valentine’s series postcard, posted in 1907 shows the quayside road in Whitby. Which seems very quiet all the pedestrians appear to be locals. There seems to be more activity further up the harbour. Perhaps the tourists had not arrived yet or gone home?

Valley Gardens Scarborough

The well tended Valley Gardens Scarborough, a girl pushes the splendid pram of her sibling for a quiet walk. Perhaps hoping the youngster will go to sleep?

Dale House

Believed to be from a postcard by T. C. Booth (of Loftus), this view of Dalehouse shows Borrowby Lane snaking off over the hillside. How quiet and peaceful it looks.

Steers Puzzle

A postcard puzzle; the card is hand coloured, in the style of older postcards before colour photography. And yet was posted in 1981. In what dark corner had the card lain for years? Answers on a postcard please.

The outdoor bathing pool near to the Spa on South Bay, Scarborough. It fell into disuse after the war and is no longer used.

Holbeck Gardens

This 1908 Postcard of Scarborough, shows a view of Holbeck Gardens. Could the hotel on top of the cliff be the Holbeck Hotel which attracted much attention, a few years ago. It gradually collapsed over the cliff, after the big landslip?
