Bayonet Practice

An early Great War postcard, typical of the first year of the war; before steel helmets were introduced.

United Movements

Loftus War Memorial 1920s, from the wide variety of regalia worn here they may well represent Freemasons, Buffs (Order of Buffaloes), Order of Shepherds, Girl Guides. W.R.V.S. Temperance Movement; and other various organisations. Can any one recognise the regalia? Julie Riddiough tells us: ”BUFFS are on there; my great great grandad is on the left of the picture.”

Ready for Action

At the back is John (Jack Lem) Grey, left front Charles Powell (Charlie) Smith, and last but not least Edward Isaac (Ted) Money all in their Home Guard uniforms and looking rather serious.

Buffs

The Buffs (Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes) pay their respects at Loftus War Memorial, late 1920s. Julie Riddiough believes: ”The man stood behind the man with the wreath looks exactly like my great great granddad Herbert W. Riddiough.  He was a founder member of the Cleveland RAOB.”

Welcome to France

Boulogne Harbour, one of the first ports of call for soldiers arriving in France, this postcard showing civilians, was probably taken before the start of the Great War. For many soldiers this would have been no leisurly disembarkation and for many there would be no return trip.

Postcard from France

Not quite a saucy postcard from France. The soldier calms his girl’s fears and wonders when he can get leave.

Postcard Home

This postcard home from France, suggests the writer is having a good time? The reality as we now know was completely different, instead of the true appalling conditions he was experiencing the writer tells a little white lie!

From the Front

A postcard from the front; the Censor has been at work, surprisingly the Soldiers Unit and Division have not been erased.

Howitzer

From the Great War a coloured postcard of an early type of caterpillar tractor hauling a 9.2 inch howitzer; an A. M. Davis postcard.
