Another busy day for the King and Queen visiting Raylton Dixon ship building works in Middlesbrough. Image (from a newspaper cutting) courtesy of Eric Johnson. Eric Johnson advised of this image: “The is the Prince of Wales later Edward VIII, at the opening of Constantine College, Middlesbrough in July 1930; this featured as part of the Royal visit to Britannia Steel Works. On the left with stick Sir Hugh Bell, in centre Thomas J. Kedward Mayor of Middlesbrough. Image courtesy of Mike Holliday, thanks to Eric Johnson for the updates. Carole Kellogg (nee Woodrow) has sent us this image of a procession in Redcar Lane. The Mayor and Mayoress of Redcar are leading and Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow are in the centre of the picture. Mr Woodrow served for many years on Saltburn & Marske Urban District Council and Carole would love to know if anyone can tell us anything about the occasion. Image courtesy of Carole Kellogg. This photograph of a parade with the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Miners’ Union banner down Brotton High Street in 1908, shows the No.1 Faithful Lodge (Brotton). The original image came to the Archive in 2010, however the Archive is indebted to Chris Twigg for the provision of a much improved image. It is interesting to note that the building which presently houses the Fine Food Outlet, Handy Pearson Property Services and R. A. Howard & Sons is incomplete; otherwise the High Street buildings remain very similar to this day. Image and information courtesy of Mrs. L. Johnson and Chris Twigg. A real show of patriotism on this first photograph courtesy of Owen Rooks, with pride in the British Empire; as he tells us some of the attendants sashes bear the names of countries such as India, Canada and Australia. We know it was held in Skelton Castle grounds. Do you know who organised this pageant we would love to know. Image and details courtesy of Owen Rooks. Another photograph from Owen Rooks showing a pageant he thinks about 1935 probably for the Silver Jubilee of King George and was set in the grounds of Skelton Castle. Image and information courtesy of Owen Rooks. HRH Prince George made a two day visit to Middlesbrough and East Cleveland to see for himself the plight of the unemployed. Loftus was included in his visit after visiting Heartbreak Hill at Boosbeck and Margrove Park. This view shows him talking to World War I veterans paraded outside the shops at the West Road/Station Road junction. Helen has advised the Archive: “Sydney Ashmore is the man without the cap talking to Prince George.” Identification of any of the people in the picture would be most welcome. Image courtesy of the David Linton Collection, the Pem Holliday Collection, etc.; thanks to Helen for the update regarding Sydney Ashmore. We also have this other view of the visit of H.R.H. Prince George, the Duke of Kent, visiting Loftus in 1933. It must have been taken from above the shops, this would provide a clear view of the Prince. This would be prior to his viewing the World War I veterans, as in our other image of the Loftus visit. There’s a good crowd at the other side of the road, in front of the Congregational Church. Image courtesy of Jean Dean. Inspector Kenneth Gillance and Mrs. Gillance (with their backs to the camera) were the judges of the fancy dress costumes in the park at Bank Top. Centre stage is Vera Shaw. Martyn Richardson tells us: ” I’m dressed as a tramp (stick over my shoulder) just to the right of the lady posing for the picture, and I’m 99% sure it’s Mark Yeoman, dressed in the blue checked shirt and the hat. I think the red dungarees in the centre of the picture may be being worn by Lee Spoor. I remember that day and the fancy dress parade.”The occasion was the celebration of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. Were you there? Image courtesy of John Roberts for the picture and Martyn Richardson for the update. The parade started from Loftus Leisure Centre. Some of the children, parents and teachers from Harry Dack Infant School are sorting out their banner; Mrs Bowman, Mrs Hitchen, Mrs Pressick and Mrs Byrne are all in the picture. This set of images was taken on Saturday, 16th July, 1988. Jean Wilson tells us:”This is my son Greg (Wilson) holding the banner up but don’t know the occasion.” I can’t remember much about the occasion. Can anyone help with more information? Image courtesy of Joan Yeoman and thanks to Jean Wilson for that update. |
