This Valentine’s series postcard, posted in 1907 shows the quayside road in Whitby. Which seems very quiet all the pedestrians appear to be locals. There seems to be more activity further up the harbour. Perhaps the tourists had not arrived yet or gone home? Image courtesy of Tina Dowey. Posted in 1904, this view of Linthorpe road, at the junction with Corporation road. We can see Collingwoods Jewellers on the right hand corner and the Kings Head Hotel on the left; which became Newhouses Store and later Debenhams (gone alas, but not forgotten). Postcard courtesy of Tina Dowey. The farm house (part of the original Saltburn Mill) at the bottom of the bank, that led to Skelton, still has the Roundhouse, for the horse wheel used to power the threshing machinery. Later photographs show that it has been demolished. We asked ”Does any one have a date for this Saltburn Postcard?” Callum Duff advises us: ”I believe that this photograph was taken in 1902. The Spa Pavilion is being extended and this was carried out using bricks from the demolished rubble of Alpha Place, Saltburn’s first houses which were finally removed from their site in Milton street in November 1901.” Image courtesy Tina Dowey and thanks to Callum Duff for the update. The well tended Valley Gardens Scarborough, a girl pushes the splendid pram of her sibling for a quiet walk. Perhaps hoping the youngster will go to sleep? Image courtesy of Tina Dowey. Is he checking his map? Is he lost? Perhaps you can tell us where this is? And as Stacey McP now tells us: ”That’s the back drive (the original one) up to Linden House (the old Rectory).” Image courtesy of Mrs Sakaropolous and thanks to Stacey McP for the identification of the location. Believed to be from a postcard by T. C. Booth (of Loftus), this view of Dalehouse shows Borrowby Lane snaking off over the hillside. How quiet and peaceful it looks. Image courtesy of Rita Unthank. A postcard puzzle; the card is hand coloured, in the style of older postcards before colour photography. And yet was posted in 1981. In what dark corner had the card lain for years? Answers on a postcard please. Postcard courtesy of Tina Dowey. The outdoor bathing pool near to the Spa on South Bay, Scarborough. It fell into disuse after the war and is no longer used. Postcard courtesy of Tina Dowey. This 1908 Postcard of Scarborough, shows a view of Holbeck Gardens. Could the hotel on top of the cliff be the Holbeck Hotel which attracted much attention, a few years ago. It gradually collapsed over the cliff, after the big landslip?
