I remember Derek McLean playing for Middlesbrough, do you? Owen Rooks tells us: ”Derek could regularly be seen on the No 65 United bus travelling to and from the Boro..and that was when he was in the first team. Professional footballers earned pretty much the same as a lot of the fans who went to see them in those days…how times have changed!!” Keith Harrison tells us: ”As Derek travelled on the 65 bus he was friendly with my Auntie Minnie Harrison of Lax Street Carlin How who was a United bus conductress based as Loftus. Derek was kind enough to get all the first team autographs for me in my first autograph album. Sadly this book is no longer in my possession.” Fred Brown also tells us: ”Similarly, one of his teammates, Derek Stonehouse who played Right Back in the same team, travelled from Lingdale to Borough on the Number 58 bus. As you say, things have changed, but he was certainly a celebrity in our little Service 58 Bubble.”

The lady was well known in Loftus, but I don’t know who she married, do you? Barbara McBurney tells us: ”The lady is my cousin Judith Dobson, her husband is Kenneth Yates, Judith’s sister is Susan.” Brian Espiner adds: “Every boy in the class was in love with Susan Dobson when we were in Loftus Junior School. She was an absolutely brilliant artist from an early age. I worked with her a couple of times on the Christmas post, but was too shy to ask her out.”

The wedding photograph of Neil and Margaret Garbutt, married 16th January 1965. The newspaper commentary read: “Happy newly weds, Mr. Neil Garbutt of Brotton, and his bride, Miss Margaret Hicks, of Loftus, after the ceremony at St. Leonard’s Church, Loftus, on Saturday.” Michael Garbutt commented: “This is my Mam and Dad, who recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. They ran the Youth Club for many years, both at the old location at the Odd Fellows Hall, and during its move to its present location at Duncan Place.
I have lots of memories of the old hall, especially playing football in the big room above and loved searching around all the rooms. In one I found the newspaper informing everyone about the breakout of World War II! Still have it somewhere. And who remembers the old black Ambulance that we used to drive around in?”
