Large Group in Field

This is the same image as the other of this title (later in the Archive) but note the little dog hiding under the ladies skirts in the front row.

Richley Headstone

This is the first of a series of Edwardian Glass plates (Glass plates were the negative form of what we now know as photographs. Later there were celluloid negatives and today we are used to electronic tifs and jpegs with our digital cameras. These images were produced using large and cumbersome cameras which involved people sitting for periods of time and developing the wet plate negative within fifteen minutes of the image being captured) These 45 plates kindly loaned to us by Michael Garbutt which feature Loftus people, places and situations. Bill Dobson Images kindly ensured the best possible images for viewing. Please enjoy them all. If you can identify people, places or situations, please comment.

Recent History

This photograph is of recent history; in North Road on the right, the long building with the tiled roof was demolished and houses were built on the site. Believed to have been a blacksmiths shop, then a warehouse, finally it was owned by Espiners. John Aitken advises: “My Grandmother, Cony Wilkin (nee Gott), used to take me to Espiner’s “Pop” factory where soft drinks were made. It was run by a lady, looking quite French to a 6 year old boy who wore a scarf and seemed to get along very well with my Grandmother. I got a bottle of pop off the bottling line sometimes if I was lucky. It was a dark and noisy place, but so many bottles of pop. Something I was not typically allowed to have; that would have been 1970/71.”

Mrs Hitchen’s Class – 1971

Is it Christmas or was it just an end of term concert, were you there? Don’t be shy give us your name.

Joanne Welford tells us: ”This was taken in Mrs Hitchen’s classroom at Harry Dack Infants 1977. The performance, I think, was the Golden Goose; I was a lady in waiting (with a pointy hat) and I seem to remember that Ruth Bowers was the princess.” Mark Hudson tells us: ”I am the one third in from the right on the front row.looks like im holding the dog.Great memories.” Kim Lindley believes: ”Pretty certain little boy about fourth from left, front row is Wayne Pursley. Blue cardigan and brown trousers”.
