The fishing fleet in Whitby Harbour. A variety of fishing craft are on view; Yorkshire coble’s both flat and double ended in the foreground and in the background two masted herring luggers. At the height of the season, the harbour was full of Scottish and Cornish boats following the herring around the coast, so full it was said you could walk across the harbour from boat to boat.

Postcard dated 1905, High Street Stockton, Market day. The centre of the photograph is dominated by the Town Hall built in 1735. The Market Cross, a Doric column 33 feet high dates from 1768. An Imperial Tramways open top decker trundles past, Thornaby bound.

Staithes looking up the valley, taken from Cowbar, the Viaduct has been demolished, so the photograph was taken after 1960.

This Valentine’s series postcard, posted in 1907 shows the quayside road in Whitby. Which seems very quiet all the pedestrians appear to be locals. There seems to be more activity further up the harbour. Perhaps the tourists had not arrived yet or gone home?

Posted in 1904, this view of Linthorpe road, at the junction with Corporation road. We can see Collingwoods Jewellers on the right hand corner and the Kings Head Hotel on the left; which became Newhouses Store and later Debenhams (gone alas, but not forgotten).

The farm house (part of the original Saltburn Mill) at the bottom of the bank, that led to Skelton, still has the Roundhouse, for the horse wheel used to power the threshing machinery. Later photographs show that it has been demolished. We asked ”Does any one have a date for this Saltburn Postcard?” Callum Duff advises us: ”I believe that this photograph was taken in 1902. The Spa Pavilion is being extended and this was carried out using bricks from the demolished rubble of Alpha Place, Saltburn’s first houses which were finally removed from their site in Milton street in November 1901.”

The well tended Valley Gardens Scarborough, a girl pushes the splendid pram of her sibling for a quiet walk. Perhaps hoping the youngster will go to sleep?

Brotton Senior School (Boys) Kilton House in 1950 (remember how the old senior schools were divided into houses?) pictured in front of the older and smaller building which housed the school. Long before the school moved down to the site now known as Freeborough Academy – previously Brotton County Modern, then Warsett – and then Brotton Base of Freeborough Community College. Julie Riddiough tells us: ”My grandad is in this picture: middle row centre behind the boy with the sign.” David Manship tells us: “I am on front row, second from right”.
Are you in this picture, please tell us?
Image kindly loaned by Trevor Metcalfe – he is in the photograph – anybody else out there? Also thanks to Julie Riddiough and David Manship for the updates.
Is he checking his map? Is he lost? Perhaps you can tell us where this is? And as Stacey McP now tells us: ”That’s the back drive (the original one) up to Linden House (the old Rectory).”

Believed to be from a postcard by T. C. Booth (of Loftus), this view of Dalehouse shows Borrowby Lane snaking off over the hillside. How quiet and peaceful it looks.
