Yes it really is them arriving at Grinkle Park Hotel in the mid 1960’s. This was main part of the school, the overflow went to Red Lodge on the front at Saltburn overlooking the sea. Norma Mellis Cox recalls: “I attended Saltburn High School 1949- 1952. Then we went to Redcar and became Cleveland Grammar School.” Linda Mary Treadgold asked: “Was is gender segregated in 1935 do you know? Doing research for a book. Thank you.” Katherine Broome advised: “It was the Girl’s High School. My mother attended it during the First World War and I did from September 1945 until July 1949. One of its most famous old girls was Dame Kitty Anderson who became Headmistress of North London Collegiate School; she was a contemporary of my mother.” Image courtesy of Eileen Found, thanks to Norma Mellis Cox, Linda Treadgold and Katherine Broome for the updates. We wondered where this train was and the probable journey, having been told by Derick Pearson that it is the 67750 (locomotive number) and was on the Whitby to Loftus line. Tom Sayers has come to the rescue with the following information: ”This picture was taken just after the train had come out of the tunnel at Easington on the way to Loftus.” An mid 20th century view of Skelton High Street from the west, the approaching United bus could have had several destinations; Guisborough, Lingdale, Redcar or Saltburn! The services Redcar to Lingdale and Lingdale to Redcar turned beside the newsagents (Whitaker’s in the 1960s and 1970s), opposite the Institute which is visible on the right. Even in those days the centre of Skelton High Street was the focal point for all bus services. This view brings back happy memories of Skelton in the same period. Image courtesy of Peter Appleton. The Green Tree at Brotton being re-thatched; in the days before the Green Tree had an upper storey. Obviously the lady from the shop next door is keeping a good eye on the men and their working methods; perhaps there was a lot of dust! Image courtesy of the David Liddle Collection. A lovely old photograph of Staithes; giving a true understanding of how closely together all the houses were. Image courtesy of Maurice Grayson. An early photograph of the staff of Skinningrove school loaned to us by George Tremain (thanks George) he tells us that his great grandmother Miss Hall is on the left.
