The Archive asked: “Who are these girls from Rosecroft School, sitting in the bar of The Rover’s Return in January, 1991? ” We soon got to know! Left to right: Elizabeth Dunn, ??, Nicola Cook, Samantha Graham. Image courtesy of Celia Parrish and thanks to Julie Riddiough, Sue Clark and Jaclyn Scott for the updates on names. This young lady featured a lot in Loftus School Sports activities. Unfortunately the Second World War put a dampener on the athletics, but here on a Matchless G3 is Brenda Varty, sorry Private Varty, B, W/249378, – in khaki and carrying despatches for 913 Coy. R.A.S.C. John Aitken confesses: “Fantastic. Growing up as your next door neighbour at 3 Wood View, I knew that Uncle Less drove a tank and ate Germans (Sorry to any Germans reading) with salt and pepper, and you rode dispatch, but hadn’t seen a picture until this one. Thanks.” Image courtesy of Brenda Horness, thanks to John Aitken for the update. A lovely photograph of the mine, but I think it may be a postcard. Someone has cropped the card (not guilty) but part of Geo. Skilbeck’s name can still be seen. Derick Pearson observed: “I think this image has been tampered with or someone has made a grave mistake which I am sure George Skilbeck would have had something to say about. The photograph has the name as Geo. Silbeck, missing the K. Very unusual at that time as they were particular and I doubt they would have printed many before that would have been spotted. If it is an original and correct as we see it, then it is well worth keeping hold of.” Image courtesy of Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum, thanks to Derick Pearson for the update Now the fan falls into disrepair as the mine is no longer working.
This one on the promenade at Redcar, a Sunday afternoon constitutional perhaps? Image courtesy of John G. Hannah and Mike Holliday. Yes looks rather a dull and dark day at Redcar with not many shoppers about on the High Street. I love the carriage on the left, maybe it’s waiting to take a shopper back home. Image courtesy of Mike Holliday. A lovely card showing five different views of Redcar, interestingly another multi-view postcard that has the South Gare on. Image courtesy of Michael Holliday. Station Road, not as we see it today but quite busy. This view is from the railway station towards the sea front. Image courtesy of Mike Holliday. That’s what the poster tells us and it was probably right in those days when Saltburn was in Yorkshire. Russ Piggot advises: ”As it says LNER on the poster it dates it form sometime between 1923 and the end of 1947 as BR was formed on 1st Jan 1948.” Image courtesy of Mike Holliday, thanks to Russ Piggot for the update. |
