Harry Dack on the March

Mrs. Hitchen and Mrs. Horness helped the children with Harry Dack School’s banner along West Road; followed by Warsett School. The parade went along West Road, up Westfield Terrace and Westfield Way to the football field. I believe there were stalls and activities up there but can’t remember any details. Can you tell us more?

Boulby Mine

One of the pit horses at the Boulby ironstone mine; believed to be by the Travelling Drift. Mr Ray Conn advised the Archive that he believed that one of the men to be seen working behind the horse was known as “Pidge.”

Skinningrove Valley (c.1963)

Raymond Brown tells us: ”This one is of Skinningrove Valley circa 1963. The old track bed of the line to Loftus/Whitby can be clearly seen with the track lifted from the BR closure (well before it was re-laid for CPL) and in the distance the pair of old Gas holders at Skinningrove. Note the lack of trees that now obscure this view.” The consensus of opinion is that this is the first junction of the zig-zag, with the ’tail’ of the first section coming off the photo at the bottom (originally to run under the viaduct, but after the viaduct was in-filled, stopping short just before the new embankment).

Loftus County Modern School Band (c.1962)

Loftus County Modern School Band believed to be on Coronation Road, Loftus; about 1962. Raymond Brown says: ”I can still name a few of the Gents/Lads on the picture but some names I’m afraid have gone after so many years.
From right to left up the nearest side: Arthur Stone (Band leader), Tony Patton, Ian Legg, Keith ?, ??, Geoff Robinson, Mike Robinson.
The gentleman on the far left (with flat cap) is Henry Rawlins, to his right is ? Ferguson and leading the band on the march is the School caretaker Mr. Mead (never knew his Christian name), closely followed by Richard Webster, I’m in there somewhere on the Tenor Horn – someone out there will no doubt add some more names. As you can see the amount of lads that are ”out of step” we needed some ”Square Bashing” and Mr. Mead soon knocked us into shape on the parade ground – THE SCHOOL YARD!!!!”

1. ‘The Boulby Flyer’

Sandra tells us that Brian took this photograph of the train crossing the bridge below Carlin How; and the next photograph, from their bedroom window on St. Hilda’s Terrace. The train is ’The Boulby Flyer’ on the first excursion of four organised by Saltburn Line Users Group on Sunday August 13th 1995; the locomotive was a Class 47773 ’Reservist’. Callum Duff assisted with: “Victorian Week at Saltburn finished in 1994. If this is 1995 then it is a special excursion organised independently. Two trips were organised to Boulby as part of Saltburn’s celebrations. The first, in 1986 only went as far as Carlin How (although they didn’t tell us that until we got to Crag Hall, thanks Langbaurgh Borough Council)! The second in 1991 did travel the whole length and was on a beautiful day.” Whilst Russ Piggot advised: “If I remember correctly the Victorian week specials were class 143 units and not loco hauled like this train.”

2. “The Boulby Flyer”
