Kilton Wood

An idyllic rural image, just to show that the Loftus area wasn’t all Ironstone Pits and Smelters – well most of it was!

Image courtesy of the Pem Holliday Collection; taken from ”Cooke’s Views of Loftus and District” an album of views around Loftus produced by Cooke’s Fancy Bazaar of West Road, Loftus.

Runswick Bay

A view of Runswick Bay, nestled under it’s cliffs, photographed by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe.  A popular place – like Staithes, with artists; a school of artists used to live and work here in Victorian times.

Image from ”Photographic View Album of Whitby” – photographed for and printed by Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee.

Fishermen

A good catch for the men on Skinningrove beach: William Halton, W. Cox, ??, the young boy was Tom Richards, W. Dart, Whit Hall, Jim Richards,  ??,  Tom Hart and last but not least A. Hart.

Note the fish creel in the right foreground. Does anyone know the date of this photograph?

Pauline Dolling advised the Archive: “William Halton (watchmaker in Loftus – of Halton’s Jewellers shop) was born in 1869. His younger brother Arthur Halton was my grand father, who worked at Loftus Railway station.”
If it is the same William Halton, then it could be between 1900/10 when he would be 30-40. However his own father was also a William Halton born in 1837. As William Dart was born about 1890, the Archive thinks Pauline’s estimation of the date will be about right. Eric Trembath has asked: “Was W Dart related to my granddad Elijah Bogey Dart? They have a resemblance to each other?”

Boulby School 1936

Boulby School educated the children from the iron sheeting clad cottages locally known as ”Tin City” Boulby. This is the class of 1936 and is possibly the last photograph of pupils at the school. We are aware that in May 1936 Mr Robert Graham (of 18 Boulby Cottages) submitted a petition signed by 22 of the residents to the Minister of Health in London objecting to Loftus Urban District Council’s clearance order which stated the properties were ”unfit for human habitation”. Shortly after that they were rehoused in Coronation Road, Loftus; interestingly one of the other residents of ”Tin City” also maintained a small shop and despite a ’promise’ from Loftus Urban District Council, no shop was ever built on the Coronation Road estate.

View from a Cliff

A fairly modern view of Skinningrove Iron and Steel Works from the Hummersea Cliff road. No. 5 Blast Furnace in evidence – and under that water tower on the cliff edge was the Day Laboratory. Rodney Begg told the Archive: “Here I spent my formative years, learning my trade under the watchful eyes (and ears) of ”Effie” Brown, Harry Burnley, Harry Grange and Norman Dale.

Underground At North Skelton

Underground at North Skelton, the Archive was not going to hazard a guess at to what is going on in this photograph, and awaited for someone out there to tell. Chris Twigg came to the rescue with : “I believe its a Walker compressed air drill.” Presumably this would be prior to inserting explosives into the holes for blasting? Danny Plews adds: “The drill bit was at least 4 to 5 feet long and had its dangers with possible finding gas or in the case when I was down there, WATER from another old mine tunnel. When this happened the driller got a soaking – it didn’t happen to me but saw it happen which meant that we had to attempt to plug the hole – not an easy task. When this happened we started another tunnel to try and get all the ore that we could possibly extract!”
