The Towers School, Saltburn 1925, for which the Archive is asking for assistance regarding this photograph. The image came to the Archive following comments to an image of the school dating c.1928. Peter Owen told the Archive: “Going through family archives, my mother (Marjorie Appleton) was at The Towers in 1925 at the age of 15 – this is the whole school photograph of that year. I would like to believe that her two sisters might also be in this photograph, Doris Appleton and Audrey Appleton. I put an arrow in the scan who I believe is my mother. Roger Byron-Collins has told the Archive: “My late mother in law, Svanhild Hojem was born in 1914 and was the daughter of a Norwegian business school owner in Stavanger and Arendal, attending Towers School in the 1920s. There were a significant number of fellow students at the school from Norway and her best friend was the daughter of Christian Salvesen of the well-known transport company.” The Archive , as well as Peter and Roger would welcome any assistance in naming pupils or staff.

Another gravestone from the Quaker burial ground at Liverton, these two stones are dated by the Quaker variation of the Julien calendar. The stone on the left is of George Thompson of Moorsholm who died on 16th June 1710; the stone on the right is of Thomas Carlill who died on the 26th October 1701. “The Quaker burial ground at Liverton is located at Red House farm. Dating from about 1669 to the early 1800’s, it is believed that up to 50 persons are interred there. Little is known about the Society of Friends in the area, But may have started after the visit by the founder George Fox preaching in Cleveland around 1654.”Ann Jackson comments: “While researching my family tree in Moorsholm I have had quite a few posts from families in America looking for Quaker relations who lived in Moorsholm. I know of . 1 family who lived at Ness Hagg which is in the wood called Hagg Wood nearer the Liverton area. It’s a ruin now. I got the information from Mrs Shaw whose family own Ness Hagg farm off the Moorsholm Liverton Road . Another family called Hoopes we’re looking for connections to Moorsholm.”
Peter Appleton advises: “I cannot speak about Quakers in the Liverton area. However, I can add information about the Hoopes family of Quakers. The Quaker burial ground near Skelton, at the side of the road from New Skelton to Lingdale and marked by four old oak trees, was also known as Tobias Hoopes’ burial ground. In their day the Hoopes family were owners of a large swathe of east Cleveland. They owned Stank House farm near Kilton and everything west to the Claphow road. I have twice shown American descendants of the Hoopes family around the area. As well as taking them to Stank House, we also visited Tidkinhow farm near Aysdalegate, which had been a family home for their ancestors. In both cases, the American family was descended from Joshua Hoopes. He had emigrated, from Scarborough, on the last vessel to be financed by William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. He and his sons converted to Mormonism and became leading figures in that faith. Hope your readers find this of interest.”

The third year class of Loftus Junior School, pictured in 1964, outside the entrance to Loftus Junior School. The Archive could only identify one pupil and Mr Philpot (his wife was the Librarian at Loftus Library for several years!); having asked for assistance the responses have been wonderful!. Janis Bonner believes: “I think this is later than 1964 probably more like 1968.This class was the year below me. I recognise some of these children.”Terry Shaw adds: “I believe this was 1968.”Terry has memories of Mr Philpot : “He was a good teacher but very strict, quite handy with the slipper, remember nice warm afternoons with him reading Swallows and Amazons.”

Westray Street, Carlin How; celebrating VE Day 1945; the Archive knows that Edna Hicks and her brother Ray Hicks were part of these celebrations. But the Archive welcomes any assistance in identifying any participants in this celebration.

Help needed! The Archive has been sent this image, purchased via ‘ebay’ as an unknown station. However eagle-eyed Andy Barwick realised it was Loftus station, with Yorkshire Regiment Volunteers (later the Green Howards) awaiting a train; but the date is unknown. It is believed that the two station porters are visible (one at each end) and possibly the station ‘lad’ cross-legged in the front. The Stationmaster (at rear close to the station lamp – with a moustache!), as well as members of the general public. Andy can assist with possible names of the Stationmasters for up to July 1914 as J. W. Nunn and from July 1914 W. H. Charlton, if anybody recognises either soldiers or railway staff. Can anybody assist with names and a possible date?Ray Brown suggests: “Robert Henry Walker (my maternal grandfather) is possibly on the back row far right next to the station porter?”

A Thirkell’s (of Saltburn) postcard view of the Station, obviously at least one of the railway staff knew of the event; the Stationmaster is standing on what is today the road! Traffic must have been very light; the date of this photograph is believed to be post 1899.

Known to date from 1869 (a newspaper clipping located behind this photograph was dated 20th November 1869), this view of the portico of the station appears to show Alpha Place on the extreme left. The photographer is unknown, but could it have been a local ‘snapper’?
Crossing the A174 at Carlin How bridge is the Cleveland Explorer 125 Special; run by Hertfordshire Rail Tours on the 20th October 1990. The Power cars were 43198+43054; the train ran from London St Pancras and included a trip to Boulby Potash.
