How quiet the road where children can wander or play without fear; how it is changed now! Image courtesy of Keith Bennison. The Archive could initially identify the two ladies on the left as Mrs Margaret Bowers and Mrs Barnes both from East Loftus, but didn’t know the others in the photograph; other than Norman. But Alan Chilton told us: ”The lady on the extreme right was Mrs Elsie Leonard wife of Museum founder Tom Leonard” and Eric Jackson added: “The cheque presentation is in the Mayor’s parlour at Langbaurgh Town Hall, Eston; c1981.” Do you know who anybody else in the picture? Image courtesy of Loftus Town Council and thanks to Alan Chilton and Eric Jackson for the updates. Norman Lantsbery is shown assisting with loading the van, but the Archive’s question is who are they; what with and where are they going, anybody know the answers? Peter Ashton comments: “The yellow circle on the ground (in the shadow of the truck) would strongly suggest a schoolyard or similar. A collection of “relief” to be sent to some charity? Hairstyles suggest late-60s to early-80s?” Image courtesy of Loftus Town Council, thanks to Peter Appleton for the update. On the right is Mayor Norman Lantsbery and Mayoress Hilda Barwick; Ray Tough advises: “Also in the photograph is the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire. Believed to be in the entrance to Langbaurgh Town Hall.” Image courtesy of Loftus Town Council and thanks to Ray Tough for the update. Do you recognise yourself in the background upside down? Ray Tough tells us: “The gentleman on Norman’s left is Bill Herlingshaw and I think this photograph was taken at the opening of the Herlingshaw Centre in Eston.” Image courtesy of Loftus Town Council, with thanks to Ray Tough for the updated information. Pictured with Norman Lantsbery, the Archive asks: “Can you recognise yourself in this photograph?” Image courtesy of Loftus Town Council.
Norman Lantsbery with Hilda Barwick in an official capacity, with on the right Bill Herlingshaw and his sister Ivy. Ray Tough and Ken Herlingshaw told us: “Norman with his Mayoress, Hilda Barwick and it looks like Bill Herlingshaw. I don’t know the two stood at the back.” Whilst Debbie Renwick told us: “I can confirm that the lady with Bill Herlingshaw (my grandfather)is Ivy his sister, she was the Mayoress when Bill was made Mayor as Doris had died at that time.”. But where, when and can anybody assist in identifying the two gentlemen in the background? Image courtesy of Loftus Town Council. Thanks to Ray Tough, Ken Herlingshaw and Debbie Renwick for the updates. Here’s Norman again sharing a joke with Arthur Seed and his wife, Ray Tough told us: “I think it is Arthur Seed and his wife sharing a joke with Norman.” John Theobald added: ” The man on left is Bob Lewis of Guisborough. He was Langbaurgh Borough Council’s first Housing Chairman.” Image courtesy of Loftus Town Council and thanks to Ray Tough and John Theobald for the information. Mr Alf Burnside with the chain of office, featured with previous Chairmen of Loftus Urban District Council, the date is possibly late 1974, but can anybody help? Left to right: Austin Sanderson, Bill Scaife Robinson, Reg Richardson, Alf Burnside, Vince Teesdale, Norman Lantsbery, Tim Ellison (last Clerk to Loftus Urban District Council). Steve Jackson tells us: “The gentleman to the farthest left is my grandfather Austin Sanderson (Micklow Lane, Loftus), involved in the UDC and Town Council for many years I believe?” Image and names courtesy of Loftus Town Council, also thanks to Steve Jackson (Son of Ros and John Jackson, ex Micklow Lane) for the update. Loftus Town Council of 1973/74 are assembled. Back row: Tom Smith, Dick Grant, Lily Hodgman, Henry (Harry) Cullingworth, Philip Brown, Mr Ranson (Borough Engineer), Tim Ellison (Town Clerk), Frank Dixon (Borough Architect), Ben Scott, Austin Sanderson, Mike Hodgson. Front row: Mary Bielby, Mike Delaney, Vince Teesdale, Alf Burnside (Chairman), Norman Lantsbery, Richard Aitken.
