 A hand tinted postcard view of Sandsend and the bay towards Whitby. A delightful view of Runswick Bay with the famous thatched cottage clearly to be seen. Clearly hand tinted and an early view long before sea walls and boulder protections from the encroaching waves. In the left foreground the ‘roofless’ building housed for many years the public conveniences and is presently awaiting ‘restoration’; whilst on the right the Lifeboat house can be clearly seen. This Judge’s postcard view shows the iconic Victorian hotel; built in 1897. Situated at the top of the notorious Bay Bank it is an excellent place to gather one’s breath after coming up the hill or gather one’s strength before venturing down the tortuous road to the beach. The Ship Inn at Marske dominates the approach of the coast road from Redcar. It is situated at the point where Marske High Street veers down into the valley area towards the beach.
