Runswick from the Sea

A view of Runswick including the former lifeboat house (now the Inshore Rescue boathouse).

Runswick Bay

A hand tinted postcard of locals taking the sun in Runswick. The un-metalled road gives an impression that this dates from the early 20th century.

Whitby’s 199 Steps

A more modern dual view of the 199 steps at Whitby and the next view after descending the steps of Church Street; before returning to the Market Place.

Coronation Street

A 1920s view of Coronation Street (but not the one on the telly!), Carlin How. How quiet the street seems, no traffic to scatter the onlookers!

Skinningrove Jetty

This view shows a ship beached between tides, presumably awaiting loading or unloading. Dating from 1900, when the jetty would at times be a very busy place.

Skinningrove Railway Station

Skinningrove Station – ironically at Carlin How! But who were the two people in the photograph? Sandy Wickenden advises: “My grandmama worked for her auntie Rosa who was wife of the station master at Skinningrove. He was apparently very proper!”

Artillery Bombardment

Another image portraying the horrors that must have been encountered in World War I. Imagine the noise and the dust at this end of the bombardment; but even more terrifying must have been to be on the receiving end!

Votes for Women!

The title says it all! We know Adela Pankhurst addressed a rally in Loftus Market Place (outside the National Provincial Bank – lately Natwest) in 1909. However we believe this image is of a supporting demonstration outside the chapel in Skinningrove, note the minister is supporting this display.

Whitby Harbour

An early hand tinted view across the harbour showing St Michael’s Church and other ancient buildings along the harbour side were all demolished, as were the Angel Vaults on Dock End.

West Pier Whitby

Possibly a Bank Holiday view of the West pier, judging by the outfits in the late 1920s.
