A delightful hand tinted postcard view of “Bay Town”, interesting is the Whitby coat of arms in the bottom right hand corner. Image courtesy of Joyce Dobson and Keith Bowers. A postcard view of the road and steps up out of Robin Hoods Bay, possibly from the 1930s based on the ladies clothing. How quiet and no vehicles attempting the perilous descent or ascent. Image courtesy of Joyce Dobson and Keith Bowers. A post card view of the Mill at Robin Hoods Bay. The building is slightly further south of Robin Hoods Bay and can still be viewed by walkers on the now popular Cleveland Way. Image courtesy of Joyce Dobson and Keith Bowers. Opening in June 1884 the Saltburn Inclined Tramway replaced the vertical hoist of John Nicholson; possibly the world’s oldest water balanced cliff lift, the main winding wheel was replaced for the first time in 1998. Restored recently complete with stained glass windows it remains a useful way to avoid the climb from either the pier or the beach. We have been advised by Callum Duff: ”The Vertical Hoist at Saltburn was built by the Saltburn Improvement Company’s chief engineer, John Anderson who also built The Alexandra Hotel on Britannia Terrace (now Marine Parade) and was instrumental in the building of Saltburn pier.” Image courtesy of Joyce Dobson and Keith Bowers, thanks also to Callum Duff for the update. The lady was well known in Loftus, but I don’t know who she married, do you? Barbara McBurney tells us: ”The lady is my cousin Judith Dobson, her husband is Kenneth Yates, Judith’s sister is Susan.” Brian Espiner adds: “Every boy in the class was in love with Susan Dobson when we were in Loftus Junior School. She was an absolutely brilliant artist from an early age. I worked with her a couple of times on the Christmas post, but was too shy to ask her out.” Image courtesy of Loftus Youth Club, thanks to Barbara McBurney and Brian Espiner for the updates. The write up tells us a little about the couple; however their connection to Loftus Youth Club is unknown to the Archive; can you tell us more, please? Image courtesy of Loftus Youth Club. A young lady often seen in Loftus who I think lived in Coronation Road, when was this wedding do you know? Image courtesy of Loftus Youth Club. The wedding photograph of Neil and Margaret Garbutt, married 16th January 1965. The newspaper commentary read: “Happy newly weds, Mr. Neil Garbutt of Brotton, and his bride, Miss Margaret Hicks, of Loftus, after the ceremony at St. Leonard’s Church, Loftus, on Saturday.” Michael Garbutt commented: “This is my Mam and Dad, who recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. They ran the Youth Club for many years, both at the old location at the Odd Fellows Hall, and during its move to its present location at Duncan Place. Image courtesy of Loftus Youth Club and many thanks to Michael Garbutt for the update. Loftus Youth Club members dressed for an event in the 1950/60s? Even the location is unknown. We are unsure of the reasons and welcome assistance. |
