Unknown Man – Now Identified as Norman Patton

Found by family members in a wallet of Derrick Bowers, we were asked to attempt to identify the gentleman; we now know who this gentleman was. Geoff Patton told us: ”This looks like my dad Norman Patton, he was very much a good friend of Derrick Bowers up to his death over 30 years ago.” This is further confirmed by Norman Patton (Geoff’s older brother): ’My younger brother; Geoff is quite right.  My parents Betty and Norman Patton became close friends with Derek around 1965 and apart from their common love of gardening, they used to go off in a caravan in the summer and travelled throughout the United kingdom.  When my father died in 1980 Derrick continued to be a close friend of my Mum and they continued with their travels to Malta,  Germany,  Belgium,  and Northern Ireland where my wife, Margaret and I were serving in the army.  I suspect that Margaret and I were the last of our family to speak to Derrick before he died.  My abiding memory was of him telling us that he had had a wonderful life.  You could say that Derrick was “one of the family”.’

Hinderwell School c.1917

This image of Hinderwell School pupils with teachers came to us and all we know are that Vena and Joseph Tyerman of Holme Farm, Hinderwell feature in this image. But we felt you would like to see another older image of education; and also wondered can anybody assist with names?.

I Promise I Won’t Make a Mess!

This image possibly taken at Holme Farm, Hinderwell in 1914/15 features (from left to right): Joseph Henry Tyerman (b.1911), Annie Tyerman(b.1914), Vena Tyerman (b.1908), Elizabeth Mary Tyerman (b.1912). We got the spelling incorrect as has been pointed out by Elaine (Joseph’s daughter). She has also told us that her aunt Annie died in December 2013, aged 99 years, 9 months and 15 days. A good life! Ruth Pattinson (nee Tyerman) advised: “Regarding the lovely picture of Joseph Henry, Annie, Vena and Elizabeth Mary Tyerman; they appear in my family tree. Their great grandfather Joseph Tyreman born 1827 was the brother of my great great grandfather James Tyreman born 1837,the son of Stephen born 1789 in Great Ayton and Eliza nee Taylor born 1801. We have found in the records searched that there are various ways of spellng our surname eg Tyreman / Tyerman / Tireman / Tyers etc in the various records researched. Thank you also to Elaine Meadows for the interesting photographs and information.

Tyne House 1906

That is what it says on the back of this photograph and Tyne House was at East Loftus; with the shop of Mr C Jones next to it. No I do not remember it, as it is dated 1906 and I am not quite that old. But after visiting today I think the shop is number 1 Tyne Street. Keith Bowers brought us an identical image in black & white which he believed to be from the 1890s. We realised that the two were identical, although the image on site was slightly better in condition.

Image courtesy of Mrs Pauline Ovington, but many thanks to Keith Bowers for the alternative image.
