The final house on St Hilda’s Place, which fronted the road which lead to the original Rectory for Loftus; believed to date from the mid 18th century. The track as shown in this image is now a ‘metalled’ road. Image courtesy of Mrs Sakelaropuolos.
Mr Maurice Jackson in 2011 gave the address of the last cottage as “The Green” Number 8 St Hilda Place. He owned 12 acres with it, that were built on during his ownership. His grandfather was Robert Dowson Bainbridge and Maurice had a photo of a steam traction engine out on this road, with the 2 doors visible of Espiners lemonade factory behind. Between 1999-2010 the building had been converted back into cottages by Stonehouse who bought the building from Espiner. Hence “Stoney Cottage”. Maurice never did find the photo- does anyone have photos of the lemonade or ginger beer “factory”? In the 1891 census the PM chapel was an abbatoir, and there was also Bainbridge’s mineral water – later Trillos ice cream.
