Still a familiar view of North Terrace, Skelton; this postcard view dates from the turn of the 2oth century. The Royal George whose host was A. (Albert) Bunn as recorded in the 1901 and 1911 Census; it is presumed that the Royal George lost the front railings in the First World War.Even today the building still exists, more as a ‘pub with good grub’; than a ‘commercial hotel’. Peter Appleton has assisted with further information regarding Albert Bunn: “Alfred Bunn was born at Abington, Cambridgeshire in 1850. He married Hannah Ord at Middlesbrough Register Office in 1878. He was a Coachman in Domestic service, living at 15 Stanhope Street, Saltburn in 1891. This is just round the corner from the Queen Hotel. Was he the hotel’s coachman, I wonder? By 1897 he was landlord of the Royal George and was elected a member of “Skelton Felons” (or Skelton Association for the Prosecution of Felons to give it its full title) in that year. In 1910 he was elected to the management committee of “the Felons” and is last mentioned in the Minute Book of the Association in 1915. He died in March 1917.”

Next door to the Duke William was a general dealers McTeague’s West End Stores. I believe Pat Wilkinson (nee Young) worked there and then bought the shop on the High street. This was formerly Garrets; the son of Mrs Garret was an opera singer, Eric. Kenneth Hannah.
Do you know why this building next to the Duke William was demolished and when please.
I am the great granddaughter of Alfred Bunn. My father was the son of Priscilla daughter of Alfred She married William Appleton after whom my father was named William. I was Ann Appleton before I married. I thought you would be interested.
Hello I have just stumbled on this page which is of gret interest to me as I am attempting to write a biography of an obscure boy called John George Ord, who was adopted by the Bunns and for some time lived at the Royal George and is recorded in the 1911 Census. I know that Priscilla had left by that time but poor Alfred made a mess of the form and had to cross our her name! He seemes to have been dyslexic as he also mispelled the name of his wife of 40+ years! I am very keen to find out anything I can about how John George Ord came to be with the Bunns. It is clear his parents had separated but I cannot establish why or when. Any photographs you have of Priscilla around 1910 would be exgtremely interesting. Please let me know how I can get in touch best wishes. Andrew King. We are very distantly related!
Hi Ann
That is very interesting! I’m just looking at the Census of Skelton for people who lived in The Old School House on the village green and noticed Alfred’s name re the Royal George Hotel.
Bet he had some stories to tell!
