Royal Visit, Loftus – 16th February, 1933

HRH Prince George made a two day visit to Middlesbrough and East Cleveland to see for himself the plight of the unemployed. Loftus was included in his visit after visiting Heartbreak Hill at Boosbeck and Margrove Park. This view shows him talking to World War I veterans paraded outside the shops at the West Road/Station Road junction. Helen has advised the Archive: “Sydney Ashmore is the man without the cap talking to Prince George.”

Identification of any of the people in the picture would be most welcome.

Image courtesy of the David Linton Collection, the Pem Holliday Collection, etc.; thanks to Helen for the update regarding Sydney Ashmore.
