Taken from Kilton Lane, Carlin How, we can see the shale tips of Liverton Mines with the mine just visible in the background. Graham Suggett asks: “When was the reservoir at Liverton Mine filled in?” Can anybody assist with a date?

At a guess, about 1962 or earlier. Shale was taken from the shale heap via a site road cut from the south western corner of the reservoir down through the wood to the Shale heap. Sandersons, the local haulier were responsible for transport. As the reservoir was filled with shale starting from the south side, a mound of sludge and weeds built up in the North west corner, where the overflow sluice was situated. Work had to stop while the slurry and underwater vegitation was loaded into the lorries and disposed of. Locals collected fish as the wet area got smaller, and took them to other local ponds.
